Outdoor furniture rarely breaks. It fades, sags and loses its shape instead, and it does it faster than anyone expects. The reasons are specific, they are physical, and one of them has nothing to do with the furniture at all.

There is a moment in May that most homeowners recognize. You pull the cover off the outdoor furniture. You carry the cushions out and put them back in place. And the color is not quite the color you remember.
Nothing has broken. Nothing is torn. It simply looks a season older than it should.
This is the quiet way outdoor furniture fails. Not in one dramatic moment, but in small steps, across two or three summers.
By the third spring, many people stop carrying their outdoor furniture out at all. The set is still there. It has just stopped looking like something you want guests to see.
Sun, rain and frost do not damage furniture in the same way — and that is why one set survives and another does not
Sunlight works on the color. Strong summer light breaks down dye, and inexpensive outdoor fabrics lose their color fastest.
You notice it on one side before the other. The cushions facing the sun go pale, while the ones in shade stay closer to the original tone.
Rain works on the filling. Ordinary foam absorbs water and holds onto it, so the cushion stays damp inside long after the surface feels dry. That is where the smell comes from.
It is also where mold begins, in the middle of the cushion where you cannot see it. Frost works on the seams. Water still held in the fabric expands as it freezes, and it pushes fibers and stitching apart from the inside.
One winter does very little. Four winters do a lot of damage. And then there is the part almost nobody thinks about. The ground.
Furniture that sits flat on a terrace never dries underneath. Rain runs beneath it, stays there, and works on the fabric from below while the top still looks perfectly fine.

Speak to people who have replaced a set early and the same sentences come back.

Outdoor furniture in Europe has to pass two opposite tests, and most is built for neither
This is worth stating plainly, because it explains why furniture that performs well in one country disappoints in another.
In the Alps and across northern Europe, the test is water and cold. Months of damp, then freezing, then thawing, then freezing again.
